HIGHLIGHTING THE ART OF GETTING READY IN ALL ITS FORMS
AN INTERVIEW SERIES
CLOSET CONFIDENTIALS is an interview series,
dedicated to highlighting the art of getting ready,
through the stories of some badass individuals,
in all of its shapes & forms.
This entry follows the tale of a young Montreal-born & raised creative, ANGIELA ROJAS
& her playful, daring & quite sentimental relationship with clothes.
PERSONAL STYLE
Q: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
ANGIELA: Obviously style is based on how you present yourself. As we grow & learn, & as things change we end up presenting ourselves in many different ways. We end up showing different faces of who we are. I feel that right now, in this stage of my life, my style is more connected to my Peruvian heritage. I found this beautiful skirt that I bought in Peru maybe seven years ago. It's very colourful. Peruvian people, especially those in the mountains, are so colourful. I'm trying to implement bold colours through pieces that represent my culture, where I come from. I feel more connected to my past & want that to show through my style.
Q: WHAT DOES YOUR STYLE SAY ABOUT YOU?
A: I'm an open person so I like to attract people who are likeminded. I like to wear things that are quite different. I think that I'm quite accepting of all our beautiful experiences & preferences, & I would love for my style to reflect that. I don't think about it that much! But I assume, unconsciously, that I'd like my clothing to be very "chaleureux".
Q: WHAT ASPECT OF FASHION EXCITES YOU THE MOST?
A: The history. I love all of the different styles that come from different decades. It's beautiful to see all of these older textures & ancient ways of constructing clothing, & explore them in new ways today. It reminds me to embrace the past. I feel like it just brings the whole world of fashion together. There's so much history in what we wear.
Q: FOR YOU PERSONALLY, WHAT FINAL DETAIL CAN MAKE OR BREAK A LOOK?
A: Ah! Ouh! Accessories! You can have that one statement piece & then work accessories around it. It's nice to have that other item that's popping too! Having a nice balance between accessories & clothing can totally make a difference to the look.
THE PROCESS
Q: WHAT DRIVES YOU TO GET READY?
ANGIELA: I feel like, selfishly, my day has to start around me. Everything has to be around me! I have my breakfast, I have my coffee with my favourite milk in it, I'm in my underwear just jamming to my music, maybe with a little joint over here...It's very intimate. If I don't have that time to just be with myself & my thoughts, I can't start the process of getting ready for the day. This is step 1. Then it's off to the closet! My outfits are very dependent on how practical it has to be for what I'm going to do that day. I'm also a very sentimental person, so I like to pick pieces that mean a lot to me.
Q: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF YOUR GETTING READY PROCESS?
A: THE END - which for me is the earrings!! I have so much fun playing with different styles & swapping them out as I go. Earrings make it so easy to boost your outfit & switch things up. It's like a little cherry on top!
Q: DOES THIS PROCESS AFFECT HOW YOU PRESENT YOURSELF TO THE WORLD?
A: If I do my process in the wrong state of mind, it definitely affects how I present myself to others. If I'm too insecure, my outer shell doesn't feel safe, therefore I can't feel as safe. But this can change throughout the day too. A nice smile from a sweet stranger can change my whole mood. But if it's up to me, I like to do this process right, so that I can control the mood of my day.
I treat my clothes with love & respect, so I expect the same from the people that I share them with.
THE CLOSET
Q: WHAT ITEM CAN YOU NEVER LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT?
ANGIELA: My earrings! Always! I feel naked without them. You can be plain Jane with everything else, then put on your favourite pair of earrings & voilà, you're bomb. You're looking bomb, you're feeling yourself, you're ready!
Q: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE ITEMS IN YOUR CLOSET?
A: My hoop earrings that are made in Peru, from Peru! I bought them during my last visit this winter. They're so simple so I love to add little pendants or whatever I want to them. Another item that I'm really fond of would have to be my pink oversized t-shirt. It's such a great shape & a very nice colour. It has the message "STAND UP" on it, with some cool designs & bleach stains. I like how it's not too feminine or masculine, it's just super fluid & perfectly in-between. I also love my cowboy boots, the white ones! It's like with every step I take they just go "stomp, stomp, stomp" & I love that. They're also super versatile & very comfortable. It's so hard to choose just a few! I hope I can change my mind at some point but I guess that would be it for now.
Q: HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SHARING YOUR CLOTHES?
A: I would not share my clothes with just anyone. I do have a select few that I share my clothes with because I know they'll be taken care of. Unfortunately, I've hurt so many of my clothes unintentionally, so I don't want that to happen under someone else's watch. If it's a stranger I would definitely be like "Yeah, take my dirty T-shirt!" So yeah, I guess I'm a little possessive! I treat my clothes with love & respect, so I expect the same from the people that I share them with.
CONFIDENTIAL
Q: WHEN DO YOU FEEL THE MOST YOURSELF?
ANGIELA: I've come a long way & have put in a lot of work into becoming more authentic. I grew up in a very crazy, busy family so there was not much time to be alone with my own thoughts. If I were to choose a moment, I think I feel my most authentic when I'm dancing. Sadly, we haven't really been able to that these days! But I feel very connected to myself & my body when I'm moving to some music.
Q: WHEN DO YOU FEEL THE MOST BEAUTIFUL?
A: I feel the most gorgeous when I get undressed! No accessories, no "fla-fla," it's just me. Obviously, I like it when my hair is clean too! But when I'm stripped down to the core, nothing on my skin, that's when I feel the most beautiful.
